Mtb 29er wheels are more stable and versatile than 26 and 27.5 inch bikes. When it comes to all out speed a wagon wheeler cannot be stopped, the momentum generated by big wheels is quite simply incredible. Let’s look at some other key factors below which help us understand this hugely popular wheel size.

Rider size

29ers are the largest wheel size available for mountain bikes so that naturally makes them suitable for the taller rider. I’m 6’6″ tall and naturally am at the end of what people here at Wiggle refer to as the ‘gigantor’ scale of things. Bigger wheels work amazingly well for someone of my height but it’s also important to note that the evolving frame geometry for 29 inch wheel mountain bikes is making them more inclusive than ever to riders of all sizes.

Grip

The levels of grip on a 29er are pretty phenomenal either on a hardtail or full suspension bike. A side effect of larger wheels is that you benefit from an increased contact patch – what does this mean? Well, it ultimately means you have more tyre contact on the trail and as a result much more traction. More grip means more control and confidence when you ride.

Climbing

Ask the average person about how a 29er climbs and a beaming smile usually pre-empts their response. 29ers literally rocket up most technical climbs. The big wheels create an undulating ride feel which encourage the rider to keep a good cadence and motor steadily up the climbs. The climbing advantages of 29ers are a pretty big reason why nearly all professional XC riders now ride on 29 inch wheeled bikes.

Cornering

The next key area where grip is a massive deal is cornering; what separates the great from the good on a trail is usually their cornering ability as most riders can ride with a degree of consistency in a straight line. Leaning the bike in and counterbalancing your weight on a full suspension 29er is an incredible experience; the larger diameter wheels do wonders for your cornering exit speed and reduce braking bumps to mere chatter.

Stability

Another key trait of many 29ers is stability; the angle of attack from a larger diameter wheel in contrast to a smaller wheel results in improved roll over and control for the rider. This is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why 29ers have been so well received by a lot of new riders to the sport. They offer a more controlled and safer ride experience to many mountain bikers who may be intimidated by technical riding and prone to coming off their bikes.

Geometry

A key reason for improved stability lies in 29er geometry. Larger wheels tend to result in slightly longer chainstays than many 26 and 27.5 inch mountain bikes. The longer chainstays play a significant part in keeping the bike stable at high speeds as they also lengthen the bike’s wheelbase. As with most things it’s a game of compromises, a long wheelbase while providing excellent stability may not feel as easy to manoeuvre as a 27.5 inch bike, a lot depends on the type of rider and trail being ridden.
